Recent Advancements in the Valorization of Agro-Industrial Food Waste for the Production of Nanocellulose

The rising climate change concerns over the excessive exploitation of non-renewable sources have necessitated need for alternative renewable and eco-friendly resources production innovative materials, achieving targets bioeconomy. Lignocellulosic biomass (LB) constituted by polymeric sugars lignin is an abundantly available plant-based material in form agro-industrial food waste crop residues that can be exploited array value-added chemicals bioproducts. Cellulose most abundant natural biodegradable organic polymer on earth derived from LB, with wide scale applications lignocellulosic biorefineries industries. negative effects activities could reduced through recovery cellulose these wastes converting it into valuable forms. However, extraction LB a difficult task owing to recalcitrant nature restricts easy accessibility value addition. Therefore, suitable method fractionation necessary better yield. Furthermore, enormous potential nanocellulose (NC), researchers are keenly interested developing ecologically acceptable methods. nanofibrils nanocrystals confer excellent mechanical properties, non-toxic characteristics biodegradability, due which they possess wide-scale diverse industrial sectors. current review emphasizes role NC agro-food waste. different pretreatment methods their outlined. areas also discussed. highlights recent trends, challenges future directions development NC-based commercial products.
